emmy watch 2008 archive...
So, another Emmy season is finally over. Given that I am now ever so busy with my new baby, I will step out of continuous site updates for a little while. My really quick initial reactions from the show was that it was probably one of the best Emmys ever as far as I'm concerned. Entertaining (except for Howie Mandel - please don't ever come back to host Howie), fun, great deserving winners, some surprises, and all of my faves right up there. And I killed at the predictor contests, again!!!!
Come back soon people, I'll have all new Emmy stuff up on the site soon for the new season.
Congrats to all the winners and nominees!

Mad Men
the nominees...
predictions
winner: A very stroing group of contenders in this category, with the six episodes submitted for each bound to impress voters. For a variety of reasons, including the buzz factor, the amount of nominations across the board, and because of the snob appeal, I think this year's winner is going to be Mad Men, closely followed by Damages and Boston Legal.
16 July (final pre-noms): Boston Legal | Damages | House | Lost | Mad Men (5 out of 6 correct)
6 March: Damages | Dexter | Grey's Anatomy | House | Mad Men
top ten contenders missing the cut
Friday Night Lights (NBC), Grey's Anatomy (ABC), The Tudors (Showtime), The Wire (HBO).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Most of the talk on nominations morning was all about how finally, non-HBO cable made some real inroads in the glamour category of Best Drama Series. So, big hearty congratulations to AMC (the new kid on the block) with the early frontrunner Mad Men, and FX and Showtime, who have been working so hard for this for years now and finally did it with two of my favorite shows Damages and Dexter (in quite a surprise) respectively. Boston Legal is not much of a surprise, neither is House, but boy am I thrilled to see Lost finally rejoin this list after a two year snubfest! Well done to the Lost people. I am happy that I stuck to my guns (when I had people telling me how wrong I was!) about Grey's Anatomy. It is a shame that Friday Night Lights couldn't make it again this year, but it is encouraging that it was in the top 10. The Tudors and The Wire were always going to be semi-finalists only.
top ten announcement (June 27, 2008): A very big congratulations must go to the teams behind those non-HBO cable series that finally managed to crack this very competitive category. Although I am surprised that the Academy couldn't make room for HBO's Big Love, especially after such a great season, I am really thrilled that the little battler Friday Night Lights makes a second attempt at a nomination this year, against all odds (and it picked its best episode by far). Based on episode selection alone, surely FX's Damages is the frontunner, and also Lost and Dexter, both picking wisely. But industry sentiment and that all important "buzz" factor puts Mad Men (from the very impressive new series player AMC) is in pole-position. In fact, I would say the only episodes I think harm the chances of their respective series in the panel voting are The Tudors (pick "207" instead), House (pick "Wilson's Heart" instead) and Grey's Anatomy (dont pick a two-parter!). My only other gripe? That Sci-Fi's Battlestar Galactica did not make the cut. What a shame, and an insult, to one of TV's best series.

30 Rock
the nominees...
predictions
winner: This is really a race between the two NBC comedies, but I can't imagine 30 Rock not pulling this off.
6 March: 30 Rock | Curb Your Enthusiasm | Entourage | The Office | Ugly Betty
top ten contenders missing the cut
Flight of the Conchords (HBO), Family Guy (Fox), Pushing Daisies (ABC), Ugly Betty (ABC), Weeds (Showtime).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Apart from what has already been said on this category, these are pretty expected nominees, and I think it will be a showdown between The Office and 30 Rock.
top ten announcement (June 27, 2008): The biggest shocker of the day belongs to Family Guy, which impressively made it into the Top Ten - what an achievement for an underdog animated show that has always been in the giant shadow of Fox's more popular and revered The Simpsons. Can it make it into the Top 5? Why not? But, at this stage, who has the guts to "predict" it? A smaller shock is the inclusion of Flight of the Conchords over more favored, and one might say, more Emmy-bate-friendly fare like the Housewives, Earl or Scrubs. Interestingly, HBO did not do so well in Drama, but killed it here, with 3 offerings in the running (and 2 of those with a serious shot at a nod). I was hoping The Office picked its season finale "Goodbye Toby", but I guess it is assured of a nod through the popular vote anyway. My two final points to make are that it is sad that How I Met Your Mother didn't make it, and, can 30 Rock lose? It's not the best episode for that show (pick something else besides "Cooter"!!!), but there's nothing quite like it on TV, and I bet that it repeats.
predicted contenders missing the top ten
Californication (Showtime), Desperate Housewives (ABC).

12 May: An American Crime | As You Like It | Bernard & Doris | My Boy Jack | Recount
notable snubs
• An American Crime (Showtime), As You Like It (HBO), High School Musical 2 (Disney), My Boy Jack (PBS), Oprah Presents: Mitch Albom's For One More Day (ABC), Pictures of Hollis Woods (CBS).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Another pretty standard list in this category, with the welcome (and not surprising) choice of Extras. I love it how Ricky Gervais can sneak into whatever cactegory he likes and still reap nods. There is often a weird occurrence in this category where a TV movie will be nominated and receive NOTHING ELSE. It usually happens with Lifetime movies (like Memory Keeper's Daughter above), and also happened with a Discovery Channel movie in a past Emmy season. Strange. I think Bernard and Doris was a bit of an "auomatic" vote. Did Academy members actually watch these movies? Because that film was not universally praised as one of the year's best. An American Crime would have been a better choice.

The Amazing Race
the nominees...
predictions
winner: This is a hard decision to make simply because I am willing anotehr show to break the 5-year strangehold on this category that The Amazing Race has had. It owuld be nice to see Project Runway or my personal favorite Top Chef win this one, but if any show might win, it's got to be TV's behemoth Amercian Idol. Still, I am going along with the crowd in saying that this year, once again, The Amazing Race will prevail.
16 July (final pre-noms): Amazing Race | American Idol | Dancing With the Stars | Project Runway | Top Chef (5 out of 5 correct)
6 March: Amazing Race | American Idol | Dancing With the Stars | Project Runway | Top Chef

commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): No surprises here, although it is a shame that Survivor seems to have permanently dropped out of this race. I really hope voters look past Amazing Race this year, because frankly, that's getting old. Vote for Top Chef or Project Runway!

predictions
winner: I'm going way out on a limb all by myself in saying that The Daily Show won't win this year. Crazy? Probably. But if there was ever a resurgence for SNL, it was this year, so I want to take a risk and say this year's winner will be Saturday Night Live.

lead actor, dramathe winner...
Bryan Cranston
the nominees...
predictions
winner: This category has been driving me crazy. All six guys are really excellent in their submitted episodes. Gabriel Byrne is touching and vulnerable in an episode where the camera is almost entirely focused on him. Bryan Cranston OWNS this charater in the pilot of Breaking Bad, and is so perfect that he is the spoiler. Michael C Hall is really captivating in his episode, and has lots of buzz to go with it. So does Jon Hamm, the Golden Globe winner from earlier this year, who has the best scene of the category in the "Carousel" presentation towards the end of his episode. Hugh Laurie is wonderful in "House's Head", and everybody knows that he is way overdue for some Emmy recognition. And then we have James Sapder, who has already won three of these puppies. He receives a lot of flack in the media and by people like us because of this, and also because many (including me) don't see what is so good about this show, apart from the right-wing bashing that is sometimes amusing. Still, when you see his episode "The Court Supreme", you'll understand why the winner will most probably, once again, be James Spader.
16 July (final pre-noms): Cranston | Hall | Hamm | Laurie | Spader (5 out of 6 correct)
3 July: Cranston | Hall | Hamm | Laurie | Spader
6 March: Hall | Hamm | Laurie | Leary | Spader
top ten contenders not nominated
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Eddie Izzard (The Riches), Denis Leary (Rescue Me).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): One of the most pleasant and welcome surprises of the year is Bryan Cranston's inclusion in this category - well done Academy! I must say, I did see this coming a mile off, anyone that has actually watched Cranston's episode will see that the voters would be hard pressed to ignore it. The same thrill also comes from Gabriel Byrne and especially Michael C Hall's inclusion - in fact, with Jon Ham, Hugh Laurie and even James Spader, I can't remember a better lineup in this category for years (but it would have been great to see Kyle Chandler here too). If it wasn't for the 5th place tie, I would have had a perfect score here. At this stage, everyone and his dog will be saying that it's James Spader's to lose. I'm not so sure. Does the Academy want another shitstorm rained upon them if they give Spader another Emmy? At this stage, it's a 6 horse race, with careful attention to the episodes needed to pick an eventual photo finish winner.
top ten announcement (July 3, 2008): This is a predictable list, given that nobody (perhaps apart from Bryan Cranston, which if you've seen the show, iit is no surprise he is here in this list) here is a really big shock. All ten guys have a decent shot at a nomination here, but I have the feeling that James Spader has such an Emmy-"friendly" episode, he looks to be the (incumbent) frontrunner. Thrilled as always to see Kyle Chandler in this list, and I really do hope I am right and that Michael C. Hall will make up for his absence last year and make the top 5.
predicted contenders missing the top ten

lead actress, dramathe winner...
Glenn Close
the nominees...
predictions
winner: Look, I can try to deconstruct the episodes and give you some meaningful commentary, but apart from a reasonably forseeable Kyra Sedgwick spoiler possibility, or a Sally Field repeat because she is Sally Field (as her episode won't help her), or a Holly Hunter win (very slight possibility) because she's Holly Hunter, this category belongs to Damages and the extraordinary Glenn Close.
16 July (final pre-noms): Close | Field | Hunter | Sedgwick | Tripplehorn (4 out of 5 correct)
3 July: Close | Field | Hunter | McDonnell | Sedgwick
6 March: Arquette | Close | Field | Hunter | Sedgwick
top ten contenders not nominated
Patricia Arquette (Medium), Minnie Driver (The Riches), Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Jeanne Tripplehorn (Big Love).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): An OK list here, with Sally Field and Mariska Hargitay making the list over (in my humble opinion) more deserving contenders like Mary McDonnell and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Actually, it is with some sadness that I see McDonnell and Tripplehorn not making the cut. That sucks. But still, we have the greats: Sedgwick vs Close vs Hunter, with Close the frontrunner.
top ten announcement (July 3, 2008): If this list ends up being the real deal, then MARY FREAKIN' McDONNELL is the story of the week, by far. Such a great achievement from one of the ebst (if not the best) actresses on TV at the moment. Can you tell Mary is my personal favorite of this year's Emmy race? I am thrilled to see her name on a list like this, packed full of excellent contenders. And if it is true, then I applaud the Academy for giving Battlestar Galactica at least something. Elisabeth Moss is also here, and although not too much of a surprise, given the Academy's obvious affection for Mad Men, I was slightly taken a back because I thought Elisabeth might have had a better shot in the supporting category. I am disappointed not to see either Chloe Sevigny or Ginnifer Goodwin from Big Love here, but at least we Big Love fans have some consolation in the amazing Jeanne Tripplehorn, who submitted one of the best epsiodes of this bunch. At this stage, I am going way out on a limb in predicting Mary McDonnell might be one of the "final five" (all BSG fans know that this is a very bad pun), but really, isn't this Glenn Close's award to lose? Anyone who has seen her performance in the Damages Pilot, tell me she isn't almost perfect in that role and deserves to win.

supporting actor, dramathe winner...
Zeljko Ivanek
the nominees...
predictions
winner: I would be happy with a Ted Danson or John Slattery win because I love those shows and these actors. But their episodes are not the strongest in this lineup. William Shatner is by far the most amusing thing about Boston Legal, but enough already. I still won't be surprised though if he wins - his performance in "Mad About You" is pretty good. Worthy even. To me, however, this category is between Michael Emerson (remember when his episode aired a while back, it seemed like everybody was talking up his Emmy prospects) who is so devlishly ghood in Lost that he is bound to be the favorite. However, Zeljko Ivanek has been around for years in great underappreciated roles, and I think it is his time. He is so moving and pitch-perfect in Damages, especially in his episode (those last 5 minutes bring shivers to my spine). For my money, I think the winner will be Zeljko Ivanek.
16 July (final pre-noms): Danson | Emerson | Ivanek | Slattery | Shatner | Underwood
1 July: Danson | Emerson | Slattery | Shatner | Underwood
28 April: Danson | Emerson | O'Quinn | Slattery | Shatner
6 March: Cusick | Danson | O'Quinn | Slattery | Shatner
top eleven contenders not nominated
TR Knight (Grey's Anatomy), Christian Clemsenson (Boston Legal), Bruce Dern (Big Love), Naveen Andrews (Lost), Blair Underwood (In Treatment), Jake Weber (Medium).l
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): I'll put aside my distaste for the Blair Underwood snub - enough said. On the very very positive side is the inclusion of great character actors finally getting some Emmy attention - John Slattery and especially one of my favorite performances of the seaosn - Zeljko Ivanek. Very very happy to see them here, along with Ted Danson and Michael Emerson, who is probably the favorite in the category (although don't count out Ivanek people!). It will be up to a careful analysis of each episode.
top eleven announcement (July 1, 2008): Shocked to not see last year's winner Terry O'Quinn here, as well as last year's nominee Masi Oka. Big congrats to the guys on this list that surprised everybody - two actors each from Lost, Damages and Boston Legal made it, which is great news for those shows, plus Blair Underwood is now finally in serious contention for an Emmy (and if you don't believe me, watch his episode submission - dynamite!), along with John Slattery, Zeljko Ivanek and Michael Emerson, who must be the favorites at this stage. A great list all in all, with the very welcome surprise of Naveen Andrews (love him in Lost) and Jake Weber, who in my opinion is the best thing about Medium.

supporting actress, dramathe winner...
Dianne Weist
the nominees...
predictions
winner: This category is a bit of a mixed bag. As per usual, one can make arguments for practically anyone. But in my mind, I discount Rachel Griffiths and Sandra Oh straight away. I just don't see them triumphing based on their submitted episodes. Dianne Weist submitted her first episode surprisngly, and I think that hinders rather than helps her cause. She is Dianne Weist though, so she certainly has a shot. Everyone seems to be predicting Chandra Wilson, and I can see why - she's a great actress, popular, and her performance is baity - lots of range and emotion. But for me, I was unmoved. And Grey's Anatomy just aint the same show in Emmy voters' eyes. After watching Candice Bergen's episode, I think she has enough gravitas and emotional content to push her over the line. Let's not forget that Bergen is the Queen of the Emmys. So, I'm backing Candice Bergen.
16 July (final pre-noms): Bergen | Byrne | Griffiths | Oh | Wilson (4 out of 5 correct)
1 July: Bergen | Byrne | Griffiths | Oh | Wilson
11 June: Byrne | Griffiths | Jones | Oh | Wilson
top eleven contenders not nominated
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Jane Alexander (Tell Me You Love Me), Rose Byrne (Damages), Jill Clayburgh (Dirty Sexy Money), Sharon Gless (Burn Notice), S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Forgetting that Rose Byrne was the best supporting (or lead) actress of the year, I'm happy to see "our" Rachel Griffiths in the mix. Dianne Weist is a bit of a surprise for me, as is the inclusion of the two Greys actresses, given the slide form grace that that show has suffered in this year's nominations. Candice Bergen makes a triumphant return to Emmy's fold - can Bergen lose?
top eleven announcement (July 3, 2008): This is a very solid list of contenders, but I have to say, are Emmy voters lazy when it comes to supporting actors and actresses - they nominate veterans no matter what show they appear in. It is completely out of the blue that Sharon Gless and even Jane Alexander are here. Although these are welcome surprises, does it have anything to do with Emmy voters choosing actors they know and love from years past? Apart from that observation, I am really disappointed that January Jones is not in this list. As far as I am concerned, she is an MVP of the last season, and really had at least 2 strong episodes to her credit for a possible upset win. Maybe voters were more drawn to Christina Hendrick's sultry and beguiling character over Jones' Stepford Wife. Coupled with that is the ridiculous notion that neither Connie Britton or Natalie Dormer are not seen as one of the ten (or eleven) best supporting actresses of last year. Maybe, in the case of Connie, she should have stayed in Lead, where she made more of an impact with voters (by getting to the top 10 stage). My final say at this stage is that if there is any justice, Rose Byrne will walk away with this (and that is not because of my patently obvious Aussie bias, OK?)
predicted contenders missing the top eleven
January Jones (Mad Men), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Natalie Dormer (The Tudors).

guest actor, dramathe winner...
Glynn Turman
the nominees...
predictions
winner: For me, this is between Charles Durning (way overdue and putting in a great performance in his episode), Robin Williams (hammy performance, not the best-written episode, but he is still quite captiating, and he is Robin Williams after all) and my fave Glynn Turman, who is searing, powerful and extraordinary in his episode. I'm taking a leap of faith: Glynn Turman.
16 July (final pre-noms): Carradine | O'Toole | Tucci | Turman | Williams (3 out of 6 correct)
3 July: Carradine | Morse | O'Toole | Turman | Williams
24 April: Carradine | Morse | O'Toole | Platt | Williams
top ten contenders not nominated
Keith Carradine (Dexter), Danny Glover (Brothers and Sisters), Peter O'Toole (The Tudors), Peter Riegert (Damages).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): No disrespect to Riegert or Glover, but the only shocks here are that Carradine and especially O'Toole did not make the list. For me, Carradine's performance in Dexter brought the show to a completely new level of sophistication - and he should be here to show for it. O'Toole is Peter freakin' O'Toole! Emmy voters love a "big name", and do name sget any bigger than O'Toole as actors go? But, let's be honest, he wasn't given much to do, and in such a strong category, voters were astute to pass him over. As for our 6 nominees, FX did very well with two of its shows represented, with Tucci, Turman and Morse fighting it out for the prize I think. To me, Robin Williams (who I usually worship) was a bit hammy in SVU, and was probably very high on the popular vote on his way to a nomination.
top ten announcement (July 3, 2008): This may be the most impressive top ten list of what has been "leaked" so far. Apart from the omissions of Peter Facinelli and Heath Freeman, I am over the moon for these choices. If we were solely looking at episode performance and nothing more (i.e. no "buzz" or the dreaded cult of celebrity in the Guest Acting categories), then Glynn Turman or Keith Carradine should be getting their exceptance speeches ready. Unfortunately, a lot more comes into play in the Guest Acting categories, so expect to see Robin Williams and probably Stanley Tucci in the mix. I am not totally convinced that my predictions are correct, but I'm sticking with them for now.
notable snubs from the top ten
• Ben Vereen - Grey's Anatomy (“Love/Addiction”)
• Edward Herrmann - Grey's Anatomy (“Haunt You Everyday”) • Anthony LaPaglia - CSI (“Who and What”) • Peter Facinelli - Damages (“We Are Not Animals”) • Brad Dourif - Law & Order (“Called Home”) • Heath Freeman - The Closer (“Ruby”)
• Jason O'Mara - Grey's Anatomy (“TBD”)
• Steven Weber - Brothers & Sisters (“Moral Hazard”)
guest actress, dramathe winner...
Cynthia Nixon
the nominees...
predictions
winner: This is one of THE killer categories of the year. Anyone who has taken the time to watch all 5 episode submissions realises that there is a real competition in this category, and it could go any way. First of all, we have five respected actresses in great roles. That alone will make it hard for voters to decide. Ellen Burstyn was magical in her episode of Big Love - the interplay between her and Jeanne Tripplehorn is outstanding. Diahann Carroll brings gravitas with her performance, but probably more subtle than the other ladies here. Cynthia Nixon is dynamite in her episode - maybe a little too dynamite, which might be misinterpreted as over-acting. The writing doesn't help her either. But she really commands attention when she's on the screen, which is quite a bit in this episode. Anjelica Huston is superb in Medium - really affecting and beautifully rendered, and I could easily see her winning. Sharon Gless was the real surprise packet of this group - I was not expecting to have enjoyed her performance as much as I did. She's a real threat in this category for the win. At the end of the day, I'm going with Cynthia Nixon by the closest of margins.
16 July (final pre-noms): Burstyn| Gless | Huston | Nixon | Sorvino (4 out of 5 correct)
25 May: Burstyn| Huston| Monk | Nixon | Sorvino
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Wow, without even knowing which actresses made the top ten, I still managed 4 out of 5 correct, only missing Carroll (who was in my sixth place) for Mira Sorvino's great performance in House. These are great choices by the voters - all of them have a great shot at winning this category, probably with Ellen Burstyn slightly in front. Again, well done to FX for getting Nip/Tuck on the register.
notable snubs
Michelle Forbes - Battlestar Galactica (“Razor”), Amy Ryan - The Wire (“Clarifications”), Katee Sackhoff - Bionic Woman (“Sisterhood”), Susan Sarandon - Rescue Me (“Solo”), Cybill Shepherd - The L Word (“Loyal and True”), Mira Sorvino - House (“Frozen”), Holland Taylor - The L Word (“Lady of the Lake”).

Alec Baldwin

predictions
winner: To me, this is a no-brainer. Watching Shalhoub and Sheen in their respective episodes confirmed with me that they are not in the running. Lee Pace is awesome in the "Pie-lette", but doesn't pack the same comedic wallop as Alec Baldwin and Steve Carell do. This is Carell's best shot at an Emmy thus far. Yet, I can't imagine him winning this over Alec Baldwin's crazy performance in "Rosemary's Baby". It's going to go to Alec Baldwin.
16 July (final pre-noms): Baldwin | Carell | David | Pace | Shalhoub (4 out of 5 correct)
6 March: Baldwin | Carell | David | Duchovny | Shalhoub
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Again, I'm thinking that Tony Shalhoub must have a copy of the nudie pictures of Academy members that William Shatner has. KIDDING! But still, Why does Tony Shalhoub get an automatic nod every single year? No disrespect to him, because he's great, and has deserved the nod and the win in some years past. But this year, maybe the voters might have given this slot to David Duchovny, who made an impressive comeback with his new Showtime series Californication. Still, I'm hapy to see Lee Pace here, but at the end of the day, it's a Carell vs Baldwin showdown. However, let's not forget, that is what I (and many others) said last year. Ricky Gervais won.
notable snubs
David Duchovny (Californication), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Brad Garrett (Til Death), Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl), Zach Braff (Scrubs), Kevin Connolly (Entourage), Adrien Grenier (Entourage), Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother), Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Zachary Levi (Chuck), James Roday (Psych).
lead actress, comedythe winner...
Tina Fey
the nominees...
predictions
winner: Parker and Ferrera are going to sit this one out. Applegate is pretty good and has a decent shot, but this is between IT girl Tina Fey, who has a great episode to back her up, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, wo probably has the strongest tape submission of the group. My pick is Tina Fey.
16 July (final pre-noms): Applegate | Louis-Dreyfus | Ferrera | Fey | Parker (5 out of 5 correct!)
6 March: Applegate | Louis-Dreyfus | Ferrera | Fey | Parker
top ten contenders not nominated
Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): 5 out of 5, not bad at all. I think Parker would have such a better shot if she picked a different episode - "Bill Sussman" aint gonna get her any hardware. Ferrera will likely sit this one out, as will Applegate, who should probably both be happy to be nominated in such a tough field. For me, it's between Tina Fey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus - both personal faves of mine, but also both having KILLER episodes backing up their claim for the gold.
top ten announcement (July 1, 2008): Most people will say the biggest surprise is Teri Hatcher's absece, especially in light of Eva Longoria's inclusion. I say it's about time for Ms Longoria, and it is a shame Teri had to miss out. My biggest surprise, in what many of us assume was the easiest category to predict, was the inclusion of Sarah Silverman. The big question is whether her episode will have gone down well with the fogey voters at the panels.
predicted contenders missing the top ten
Patricia Heaton (Back To You), Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives).

Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program).
also snubbed from the top ten
Judy Greer (Miss Guided), Joely Fisher (Til Death).

Jeremy Piven

predictions
winner: Jeremy Piven. No contest - watch his episode and tell me how anyone, even the magnificent Neil Patrick Harris, can unseat him.
6 March: Cryer | Harris | Krasinski | Piven | Wilson
top ten contenders not nominated
Fred Willard (Back To You), Justin Kirk (Weeds), John Krasinski (The Office), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Tracey Morgan (30 Rock).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Not a very surprising list, although I do feel for the 30 Rock guys and John Krassinski, who is now snubbed two years running. I am surprised that voters took to Kevin Dillon again - I thought last year's nod was a one-off (nothing against him, but I thought his episode last year was stronger). At this stage, although we might be tempted to say Neil Patrick Harris will finally get an Emmy for hsi role as Barney, I don't think Jeremy Piven can lose - he has submitted such a perfect episode for Ari Gold.
top ten announcement (July 3, 2008): THis is not a very surprising list, but solid nonetheless, with the usual suspects (and two a piece) from Entourage, The Office and 30 Rock. I'm happy to see Justin Kirk here, but I can't imagine him making the top 5 with his episode, which (in my opinion), just ain't that funny. Fred Willard is a bit of a surprise I guess, especially becuase his two high-profile leading co-stars did not make the cut in their respective categories. Nice to see Neil Patrick Harris make a lone showing from his great show (for a second year running). Biggest snub is Chi McBride from Pushing Daisies, especially because all three of his co-stars made teir own lists. What's that all about?
predicted contenders missing the top ten
Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), Chi McBride (Pushing Daisies).

also snubbed from the top ten
Evan Handler (Californication), Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), Ethan Suplee (My Name Is Earl), Ed Helms (The Office), John C. McGinley (Scrubs), Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty), Tony Plana (Ugly Betty), Kevin Nealon (Weeds).

Jean Smart
the nominees...
predictions
winner: Although I'd like to say Kristin Chenoweth has enough to steal the win, or that Vanessa Williams, who has picked a fantastic episode, or Jean Smart, who is the best thing about that show -are the frontrunners, once you watch Amy Poehler do her thing in SNL, it becomes clear that she is in the driver's seat. My pick is Amy Poehler.
16 July (final pre-noms): Chenoweth | Fisher | Krakowski | Taylor | Williams (3 out of 5 correct)
3 July: Krakowski | Perkins | Poehler | Taylor | Williams
6 March: Fischer | Perkins | Pressly | Taylor | Williams
top ten contenders not nominated
Judith Light (Ugly Betty), Jenna Fischer (The Office), Conchata Ferrell (Two and a Half Men), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Although I am overall quite happy with this list of nominees, it just occurred to me that Jenna Fischer, long regarded as a shoo-in in this category, was not nominated - that's somewhat of a surprise, no? Even more surprising is that this new (stupid) ATAS rule that sketch show players must submit in these categories actually paid off big time for Amy Poehler - she is now a frontrunner for this award because of the nature of her comedic work on display in the "Tina Fey" episode. The other 4 ladies are no surprise however, and I am thrilled that Emmy newcomer Kristin Chenoweth makes an appearance. My final thought here is "what the hell does Jane Krakowski have to do to get some Emmy love?" To me, she is the best thing about 30 Rock, and ha sbeen snubbed two years running, along with the Ally McBeal snubbery of years gone by. We Want Food? No! Jane Want Emmy!
top ten announcement (July 3, 2008): Another wonderful surprise here with Amy Poehler's inclusion. This will give all of the SNL'ers hope that they have a shot in future Emmy races. With her range and laughs, Amy should be seen as a frontrunner in this race. Not many other surprises here - lots more Emmy "veterans" in the list, and "it" girl Kristin Chenoweth is here as well. All in all, a solid list of contenders, with my personal Emmy fave in this category (Jane Krakowski) in with a great shot.
predicted contenders missing the top ten

winner: Will Arnett
25 May: Arnett | Bridges | Broderick | Ribisi | Wagner
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Not knowing the top 10 contenders obviously hurt my chances in getting a better score! Arnett was always going to get in, but the other 4 are a bit of a surprise to me. Berman especially is a welcome surprise, and Buscemi I feel did not do much to warrant an Emmy nomination I must say. HiIt would ahve been more understandable if his spot had gone to someone like Matthew Broderick or Andy Richter from the same show.
notable snubs
Beau Bridges - My Name is Earl (“No Heads and a Duffle Bag”), Matthew Broderick - 30 Rock (“Cooter”), Richard Chamberlain - Desperate Housewives (“Distant Past”), Ashton Kutcher - Miss Guided (“Hot Sub”), Paul Reubens - Pushing Daisies (“Smell of Success”), Giovanni Ribisi - My Name Is Earl (“Bad Earl”), Andy Richter - 30 Rock (“Ludachristmas”), Freddy Rodriguez - Ugly Betty (“Bananas For Betty”), Blair Underwood - The New Advesntures of Old Christine (“The Big Bang”), Robert Wagner - Two and a Half Men (“Our Leather Gear...").

top eleven contenders not nominated
Vivica A. Fox (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Shirley Knight (Desperate Housewives), Jane Lynch (Two and a Half Men), Annie Potts (Ugly Betty), Amy Ryan (The Office).
commentary
nominations announcement (July 17, 2008): Another almost-sweep by 30 Rock guest players sees Emy vets Edie Falco and Elaine Stritch fight it out against other Emmy favorites Polly Bergen and Kathryn Joosten. Finally, Carrie Fisher gets some awards love!
top eleven announcement (July 3, 2008): This is also a really solid list of contenders, with three awesome actresses from new Emmy fave 30 Rock and the so-far snubbed Desperate Housewives in the mix. Sarah Silverman is on fire this year with this her second shot at Emmy glory, and a nice surprise was in store upon reading Vivica A. Fox's name. Still, my personal fave here is Amy Ryan. That yoda voice alone should net her the gold!
notable snubs
Marlo Thomas - Ugly Betty (“Something Wicked"), Sherri Shepard - 30 Rock (“The Collection”), Sharon Lawrence - Monk (“Mr Monk and the Bad…”), Heather Locklear - Rules of Engagement (“Engagement Party”), Mary-Kate Olsen - Weeds (“Grasshopper”), Janeane Garofalo - Two and a Half Men (“Media Room Slash”), Sara Gilbert - The Big Bang Theory (“The Hamburger Post”), Sarah Chalke - How I Met Your Mother (“Ten Sessions”), Pamela Adlon - Californication (“The Last Waltz”), Alyssa Milano - My Name Is Earl (“Frank’s Girl”), Britney Spears - How I Met Your Mother (“Ten Sessions”).
